Before diamonds are available for jewellers to make into beautiful pieces of jewellery for us, they are known as roughs. Formed over hundreds of years underneath the earth's surface, diamonds usually reach the surface of the earth as a result of volcanic eruptions. Once the magma from the volcanic eruption has cooled, it then hardens into a blue stone called kimberlitic stone.
Diamonds are made of carbon which has crystallized in the system of highest symmetry known as the cubic system. The four “C's” that are critical to choosing a diamond are its clarity, color, cut and carat size.
The durability of any gem depends on its initial hardness, as well as its ability to protect itself from damage. Diamonds also have a high capability of dispersion of light, which gives cut diamonds the ability to display vibrant colors brilliantly. For these reasons, and for the sheer beauty of the gem, diamonds are valued highest of all in the market for gemstones.
